A while back, I was asked to watch a friend’s kids overnight. I did a lot of babysitting back in high school, but this was the first time since getting my concealed carry permit, AND the first time watching kids overnight. Of course, I wanted to bring my pistol along and this family was supportive of that, but I knew I needed a plan for securing the gun while in their home with the kids. Up until this point I never had the need to secure a firearm outside of my house overnight, so this was a learning experience.

The only lock box I had at the time weighed around 15 pounds which, as safes go, it is pretty small, but it was definitely too big to be toting around in a duffel bag! To accommodate the lock box, I packed a larger bag than normal, and the weight was unequally distributed, so it felt awkward. In fact, I struggled to get it in their house. Their young son offered to help me, but I declined his help because he didn’t need to know I had a safe in there. He just watched in bewilderment as I teetered up the stairs with my heavy duffle and said, “geeze what did you bring?!”

The night went without a hitch and the safe did its job, but there had to be an easier way.

While touring the exhibit space at SHOT Show 2020, I discovered a much better solution; the LifePod by Vaultek. This sleek little vault can be used to store of items, and is great for those awkward times when you must be separated from your firearm and can’t be certain others won’t find it.

Unlike my babysitting vault, the LifePod is easy to carry. It only weighs 2 pounds, 3 ounces (without firearm), and it’s 9x9x9 inch size makes it simple to stow in a large purse, overnight bag, or small roller bag. The corners and edges of the vault are rounded so it slides in and out of your bag smoothly without snagging.

The battery-operated latch can be unlocked with number pad or a conventional key. An optional lanyard can be attached to the vault for securing to a piece of furniture or to the inside of your suitcase.

You can store jewelry, credit cards, passports, valuables, etc. The foam lining holds contents securely, and for you boating enthusiasts, it’s airtight and will float!

Accessories to be purchased separately include a 4’ steel cable to secure the box to a stationary item, an organizer that fits in the lid (see below), pluck foam inserts, and a sling bag cover which comes in two colors- black camo and dark grey.

Since the LifePod is TSA compliant, you can use it to secure your firearm while traveling on commercial airlines. I was looking forward to bringing mine on a trip to the Grand Canyon in March, but unfortunately the trip was cancelled due to Corona Virus. So far, I’ve been using the LifePod at home, but I’m looking forward flying with it in the future.

If you’re looking for a good way to secure your firearm while away, check out the LifePod. I highly recommend it!

If you travel with a self-defense tool, do you keep it secured at night?
