“I was out of my comfort zone, but in a good way.”

One of my goals this summer was to get some firearms training. I wanted to refine my shooting skills and build speed both with my draw and placing shots on the target. I’ve heard good things about Achilles Heel Tactical, so I signed up for their Performance Baseline Pistol, which is an intermediate level class.

I’m going to be honest; I was a little nervous going in. Out of 19 students, I was the only woman and one of two people using a subcompact pistol; everyone else had a larger gun. I wore your average IWB (inside the waistband) Kydex holster and was one of only two people who were not decked out in tactical or competition gear.

To say I felt out of place was an understatement.

Did a petite defensive shooter belong in this group of seemingly tactical, strong, and talented men? Well, I was eager to learn, so I figured I did. Thankfully, but not surprisingly, they welcomed me in.

Get Firearms Training

Here’s a little something about me, my motivation for training is pretty high and I often enjoy being outside my comfort zone. But for the women who would never dream of taking a class like this, I want to share what I learned this summer. First, because what I came away with, is helpful for every shooter. And second, I want to encourage and challenge you to get training for yourself. Whether that’s with Achilles Heel Tactical (whom I highly recommend), or another trainer.

I no longer consider myself a beginner, and have attended several trainings, but this event changed my opinion on several things. In upcoming posts I’ll share what I learned about grip, stance, trigger technique, and more. Stay tuned for the lessons and tips that made things “click” for me this summer.
